Helen & Douglas HouseHelping children & young adults live life to the full, even when that life is short.
‘You have to make the best of a short life and this is a place where it can happen’

Many of the young people who visit us can be isolated and unable to lead independent lives, they rely on their main carer for everything. It often feels that their whole life is dictated by other people – when they go to bed, when they get up, what they do and when they do it. Helen & Douglas House gives them the chance to make choices for themselves and experience things they would not normally easily access – such as trips out and being with people their own age – but still have the support and specialist care they need. As well as specialist medical care we also offer a range of social activities and therapies such as music, art therapy & hydrotherapy.
We provide medically supported short breaks, as well as nursing and end of life care. Doctors, nursing teams and carers offer 24 hour one-to-one care and support. The teams are experienced in end-of-life care and manage this with dignity, sensitivity and comfort. Help is offered to the whole family, through counselling and practical support for as long as it is needed.
Our aim is to help every one of our guests and their families live life to the full, even when that life is short. We currently care for approximately 300 families and 60 bereaved families from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northants, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and parts of London.
‘This is where parents can lay down their loved and loving burden for a time, so they can be parents for their other children, or just spend time on their own. It is our window to be a normal family for a while.’
